1. Fight complacency"
A great manager will push you, but if you don't work for one, push yourself. There's always room to become better at what you do. If there's no internal incentive pushing you, it's time to leave and look for greener pastures.
2. Go above and beyond
The job description says Monday through Friday, 9 to 5. If only emergencies gave a damn about business hours. Don't back down from challenges that require extra. "If you want a manager to go that extra mile for you, you must do the same for him or her,".
3. Know when to say 'No'
Taking on too many tasks that you crash your deadlines, makes you useless. "Saying, 'I think I'm already overloaded with work and cannot take on anymore, but I may be wrong' will not put your boss on the defensive.
4. Share the wealth of ideas
If you figure out a way to make the company more efficient, let it be known. Choose your words, though. "Not seeking individual glory but institutional glory is better. It's less likely that you'll incur collegues' jealousy. Let it be known your idea is good for everyone.
